Engineering Technician


SpanIO, based in San Francisco, is developing products to reduce the cost and complexity of adopting distributed energy systems. SpanIO is looking for a technician to support the development of our products. The role will range from soldering surface mount components, mechanically assembling prototypes, designing and building test setups, running tests, and writing test reports. You will work closely with our engineering development team to understand needs and work quickly to develop solutions. In this role, you will have a broad scope of responsibility that involves both electrical and mechanical components.


  • Design, fabricate, and assemble prototypes

  • Build and setup test/validation equipment

  • Install electrical and controls or data circuits

  • Installation and use of data acquisition equipment and other instrumentation

  • Record and analyze test data

  • Document and report on issues found during test and work closely with engineering team to address these

  • Support the development of test/validation plans and methods that assure reliability, structural and other engineering targets are met by the component/system tested

  • Maintain test/validation equipment

  • safety first (HV covers, lock out tag out


AS or BS degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent –and-

  • 5 years + of experience in an engineering development environment –or-

  • 5 years + experience in a Test Technician Role

  • Strong understanding of engineering and reliability fundamentals

  • Ability to solder both surface and through hole

  • Ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools, shop tools, and lab equipment

  • Strong experience with reading, interpreting, and drawing electrical schematics and circuits

  • Strong experience with wiring diagrams and harness drawings

  • Experience using digital multimeters and HV power supplies

  • Experience in machining and fabrication

  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills

  • Remain engaged, proactive and positive in tough circumstances, owning assignments and taking full accountability for their success

  • Positive attitude, eagerness to learn and ability to change direction quickly


  • 3D CAD skills (Solidworks)

  • Experience in the use of a broad variety of test, control and data acquisition equipment and software (i.e. Lab View, Python)

  • Experience with oscilloscopes

  • High voltage/power experience preferred

  • Low voltage and control system experience preferred

  • Experience with HV battery systems preferred

  • First aid/AED/CPR training
